A sterile, single use cookerIn a range of colours to reduce accidental sharing
- Packaging: Individual sterile blister pack.
- Composition: 2,5 ml aluminium sterile spoon in a range of colours.
- Objectives: To reduce harm arising from sharing and re-use of mixing spoons/cookers, such as the transmission of hepatitis B and C and HIV, abscesses, endocarditis and cellulitis from bacterial contamination. To encourage the use of aseptic mixing and safer injecting techniques.
- Indications: The prevention of infections related to the sharing of spoons/cookers. Helps to reduce the risk of infections arising from sharing, borrowing and re-use of mixing spoons/cookers. The availability of five different colours reinforces the importance of using own equipment.
- Cautions: Fingers should never touch the inside of the Stericup-any bacteria, fungi or viruses such as the Hepatitis C Virus (ie. in traces of blood) present on the surface of the skin may contaminate the drug-mix being prepared for injection. Never share or draw-up after someone else has used the
spoon. Even if it has been cleaned, the spoon can still contain viruses from someone else’s syringe, filter, water or fingers. One jab is all it takes to get infected ! Never re-use someone else’s works.
- History: Developed in France in 1996 with input from needle exchange programs. Safety and efficacy validated through exhaustive laboratory testing using brown heroin (base), white heroin (hydrocloride), cocaïne (hydrochloride), crack (cocaïne base), amphetamines and crushed
tablets. Approved as a therapeutic device (CE mark) and distributed throughout France with government support to all pharmacies and needle and syringe programs. Distributed and used worldwide by several Public Heath Services.
- Directions for use: Press down on the Stericup® handle to remove it from the blister. Take care to avoid touching the inside of the cup. Squeeze the plastic handle between thumb and index finger, and insert the Stericup®’s aluminium handle. The covered Stericup® handle protects the user’s
fingers from hot metal during the “cooking” process. To avoid any accidental sharing of “cookers”, users are advised to take note of and remember the colour of the particular Stericup they have chosen.
Stericup® is a CE registered medical device.
